Ken Navarro - Brighter Days (1995)
Maryland guitarist Ken Navarro and his independent label, Positive Music, have shouldered their way in among the Larry Carltons and GRPs of the world to become major players in the pop-instrumental field. Not only have Navarro's own albums consistently landed in the top 10 of the "adult alternative" and "new adult contemporary" charts, but so have those of his labelmates Gregg Karukas and Bobby Militello. Navarro's sixth solo album, "Brighter Days," is a further refinement of his label's successful formula: bright, easily digestible pop melodies played cleanly and precisely over steady, comfortable rhythms. This recording features the presence of Positive Music's saxophonist Brandon Fields, who adds a slightly different spin to Navarro's melodies in easy-going, Najee-like lines. Navarro himself plays nylon-string guitar on 6 of the 10 cuts, lending a delicate, Earl Klugh-like feel to the proceedings. --Geoffrey Himes

Avenue Blue (Feat. Jeff Golub) - Naked City
Jeff Golub and his crew have got a relaxed and polished style- in the light jazz vein of say Bob James or the "Crusaders" They move from funky tunes, thru soulful ballads and on to rousing infectious uptempo grooves. This is really enjoyable instrumental work, familar but never hackneyed. The musicianship is exemplary, tight and inspired throughout. I'd put this disc in my top ten of the past three years- highly reccomended.

Each of his five albums has charted Top 5 Contemporary Jazz and his last four have also reached the R&B Top 50. A Smooth Jazz star with a major Urban AC audience, Norman Brown follows 2002’s Grammy®-winning Just Chillin’ with West Coast Coolin’, featuring songs written by Eric Benét, James Poyser and Norman Brown himself. Renowned for his guitar sound, Brown now debuts his sexy, slick vocals on West Coast Coolin’, including a remake of Marvin Gaye’s classic "What’s Goin’ On." As West Coast Coolin’ proves, there’s no one smoother or cooler than Norman Brown.

Fattburger - All Natural Ingredients (1996)
San Diego's Fattburger is one of smooth jazz's elder statesgroups, and could easily rest on their laid back laurels if they chose to. Instead, the powerful playing and eclectic tempos of All Natural Ingredients combine to create one of their most hard hitting works to date. A good deal of the new energy comes from snappy electric guitarist Evan Marks and Hollis Gentry, an original member who guests here with cranked up, jazzed out solos on flute and sax. While laid back softies like "Till Then" have the trademark feel, it's the firepower of hypnotic urban jams like "Coronado" and "100% Fatt" which kicks these ingredients into high gear. Tommy Aros gets zesty Latin percussion workouts on the feisty original "Do That Again," while Gentry and keyboardist Carl Evans (doing the blues) fuse to make their version of "Oye Como Va" one of the wildest in recent memory. Another well-read cover, the summery shuffle of Tears For Fears' "Everybody Wants To Rule The World," rounds out what amounts to this band's revitalization as they enter their second decade in pop-jazz consciousness.

Johnny Smith - 1967
"During the fifteen years since he recorded his famous version of "Moonlight in vermont", Smith has made many albums, but it is probably no exxageration to say that on none of them has he had an accompanying unit so well attuned to his needs as this. His three companions are fellow spirits in terms of technical ability and devotion to music. Despite extraordinary instrumental facility, none is an exhibitionist, for their facility is at all times governed by good taste..." Stanley Dance
